Description
This aviation crate is built for taking a dog or cat on a flight, with a wire mesh door and secure locking. Choosing the correct size matters, as airlines expect the animal to be able to stand and sit upright, turn around normally and lie down in a natural position.
Please note that IATA does not certify, approve, endorse, or sell any particular pet container manufacturer, brand, make, or model. Equally so, IATA does not offer, solicit, endorse, or approve any particular pet or puppy transport or relocation services, regardless of whether these be offered via email or the internet. Readers should pay attention to fraudulent offerings that claim the opposite.
Key benefits
- Designed for air travel with dogs and cats
- Sized so the animal can stand, sit erect, turn about and lie naturally
- Mesh door firmly attached rather than stapled, so it cannot be pushed out or gnawed through
- Locking mechanisms that can be checked before departure
- Suits travel in the cabin or as special baggage in a heated, ventilated hold, depending on the airline
How to use
Before you book, work out the answers to a few questions: is the journey domestic or international, when do you want your pet to travel, what are its size and weight, how many animals are going, will your pet be accompanied, are you breaking the journey or stopping over at an intermediate station, what is the final destination, and do you have a suitable container.
For EU travel, remember that the European Union treats commercial and non-commercial pet imports differently, and also distinguishes between movements within European countries and arrivals from other countries (Third countries). Information is published for non-commercial imports from Third countries, covering health certificates and identification, and for movements within the EU, covering the Pet Passport.
Let your pet get used to the crate a few weeks or months before departure, as animals settle far better in a container they already know. If you plan to build your own wooden crate, check first that the airline accepts custom built containers, as some dogs must travel in a sturdier design than Container Requirement 1 (CR1); make sure every lock works and that the mesh and its fixings cannot be distorted, chewed or pushed loose.
Most airlines ask for a health certificate, whether your pet flies in the cabin or as an unaccompanied shipment. Only small dogs and cats may travel in the cabin, and some airlines carry them as special baggage in a heated and ventilated hold instead; this suits them well, as the hold is quieter and darker and they tend to rest. Ring your chosen airline to confirm your pet is accepted on that flight and date, because numbers per flight are often limited, so book as early as you can, then reconfirm at least 48 hours before departure.
Ask how early you need to check in. Airports are busy and stressful, so keep waiting to a minimum: check in as late as possible for cabin travel, or early for hold travel so your pet can be settled somewhere quiet and dimly lit. The day before, cut back on food but keep water available, walk your dog before you leave home and again before check-in, and give a light meal 2 hours before handing the animal over, which helps to calm it and is a legal requirement in the United States. If your pet travels as air freight, check the freight facility will be open for the consignee to collect, and try to ship on weekdays when full staff are on duty and communication along the route is easier.
