How to use

Let your pet get used to the crate a few weeks or months before departure, as animals travel far better in a kennel they already know. Check that every locking mechanism works and that the animal cannot distort, gnaw at or push in or out the wire mesh or the parts holding the mesh of the door, which must be firmly attached rather than stapled. If you are thinking of building your own wooden crate, confirm with the airline that custom built containers are accepted, as some dogs may require a sturdier design than Container Requirement 1 (CR1).

Most airlines ask for a health certificate, whether the animal flies in the cabin or as an unaccompanied shipment. Only small dogs and cats may travel in the cabin, and some carriers will instead carry them as special baggage in a heated and ventilated hold, which is often quieter and darker and suits them well. Ring your chosen airline to confirm your pet is accepted on the flight you want, as numbers per flight are often limited, then reconfirm at least 48 hours before departure.

Ask how early you need to check in. Airports are busy places, so keep the wait short: check in as late as possible for cabin travel, or early for the hold so your pet can be settled somewhere quiet and dimly lit. Cut back the amount of food the day before while still offering plenty of water, walk your dog before you leave for the airport and again before check-in, and give a light meal 2 hours before handing the animal over, which helps to calm it and is a legal requirement in the United States. If your pet goes as air freight, make sure the freight facility will be open so the consignee can collect. Weekdays are preferable, as full staffing makes liaison easier along the route.

Points to settle before making reservations: whether your pet travels within your own country or internationally, when you want it to travel, its size and weight, how many animals are going, whether it will be accompanied, whether you intend to break the journey or stop over at an intermediate station, the final destination, and whether you have a suitable container.

The European Union separates commercial from non-commercial pet imports, and also distinguishes movements within European countries from those arriving from other countries (Third countries). Information is published on non-commercial movement from Third countries, including health certificates and identification, and on movement within the EU, including the Pet Passport.
