Jet Black Glass Fine Gravel 2kg

A gravel bed does more than look tidy. It gives helpful bacteria somewhere to settle, and those colonies break down fish waste, uneaten food and bits of plant matter. Without a comfortable bed to colonise, the bacteria will settle elsewhere, but often not in the numbers needed to keep water safe for your fish.

Bare-bottomed tanks usually need water changes far more often, so that harmful wastes do not build up. In a busy, heavily stocked tank, even regular changes may struggle to hold ammonia and nitrites down. There are times when substrate is not wanted, mainly in a grow-out tank used for hatching eggs and rearing fry. Those tanks must be kept spotless, with frequent water changes and waste or leftover food vacuumed away promptly.
