Alfalfa hay, also known as lucerne, is a leafy forage made from selected alfalfa and dried naturally in the barn so its goodness is kept intact. The crunchy stems and appealing flavour make it a useful complementary feed for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, degus and other small animals.

It carries more protein and calcium than the usual grass hays, which suits young animals, those still growing, breeding pets and any small pet building back up after illness or injury. The coarse strands also encourage plenty of chewing, which is good for both digestion and tooth wear.

Feeding Advice

Because alfalfa hay is richer than most grass hays, it will not suit every adult small pet as their main forage. Bring it in slowly over 7\u201314 days and feed it as part of a balanced diet. Ask your vet or an animal nutrition specialist if you are not sure it is right for your pet.

*Alfalfa Hay is higher in nutritional value than our other varieties of hay, particularly calcium and protein, therefore is not suited to all small pets: we recommend introducing this hay type gradually over a period of 7 to 14 days. And always speak to a vet or nutritionist first if unsure.
